More than 2 million children in kindergarten through 12th grade are learning online, and their ranks are growing by almost 20 percent each year, according to research by Ambient Insight. Currently, 45 states have significant supplemental online learning programs, or full-time programs, in which students take most or all of their courses online.
“One reason families are turning to full-time virtual schools is that parents are seeking a more personalized education for their children, where students’ studies are tailored to their abilities and interests, and they can work at their own pace,” says Dr. Steven Guttentag, executive vice president and chief education officer for Connections Academy, a leading virtual school provider that offers both public and private virtual school programs. “Of course most importantly, they work. Students are achieving at high levels and matriculating into some of our nation’s best universities.”

Online high school turns two Lake City students’ lives around
Filed under: BestOnlineHighSchools.com, Online High Schools, free online high school; Tagged as: high school diploma online, Provost Academy South CarolinaNo CommentsWashington’s mother, Alice Peterson, said she knew her daughter was headed down the wrong path.
“I might have been in jail and she might have been in the funeral home somewhere,” Peterson said.
Instead, the cousins heard about Provost Academy, a free public online high school for South Carolina residents. They meet at Refuge Outreach Ministry in Lake City to take their lessons.
“It’s all around the kids’ needs and maybe schools should have been doing that for a long time,” Provost Academy Executive Director Darrell Johnson said. “Our school is very student-centered. It’s all about the kids and success. We don’t allow them to fail, either.”
Students spend an average of six hours a day working on their classes.
Graham said her online classes are harder than classes she was taking at public school.
“You’re by yourself and there is no one beside you; it’s basically you’re on your own,” she said.

E-Education Inc. Seeks the Mainstream
Filed under: BestOnlineHighSchools.com, Uncategorized, free online high school; Tagged as: Connections academy, kaplan virtual educationNo CommentsThe for-profit e-learning company K12 Inc. grew 40 percent last year, generating $385 million in revenue by providing virtual courses to 70,000 students across the country. Connections Academy, another such provider, generated about $120 million in revenue serving up online courses to some 20,000 students. And last month, the education technology company PLATO Learning announced that it is now offering online Advanced Placement courses, marking the first time the company will do so as part of its courseware for school districts.
Experts say for-profit providers of online courses—long seen as an option for home-schoolers and a potential rival to public schools—are breaking into the public education mainstream as more schools mix face-to-face classes and online courses to expand their curricular offerings. With demand for that “blended” approach expected to grow, other players in the online-coursetaking marketplace, such as Apex Learning, Aventa Learning, Compass Learning, and Kaplan Virtual Education, are also seeking business in public schools.

New Lake City school’s staff has ‘calling’ to meet students’ needs
Filed under: BestOnlineHighSchools.com, News, Online High Schools; Tagged as: Emmanuel Academy, virtual high schoolsNo CommentsMany schools are cutting arts education, but Ramsey wants to ensure her students have access to such programs.
“I feel like that is a chance for students to develop their confidence,” she said.
Emmanuel Academy also will offer Bible classes as electives, and Ramsey said she hopes churches will allow students to present holiday programs to their congregations.
“Emmanuel means ‘God with us,’” Ramsey said. “That name was not chosen just because it was a beautiful name. It was chosen because of that meaning.”
Teachers at the school also hope to teach students good stewardship by providing ways to give back to the community.
For students moving beyond eighth grade, the school is considering partnerships with virtual high schools and universities’ online programs, Evans said.
School leaders also could guide students into an adult education program or develop a high school program at Emmanuel, she said.
